My last post said I was going to leave the personal development style posts and write about travels and adventures in Nepal. And that’s still the case, except, today, something came to mind I wanted to share.
I’ve called it ‘Adapt or die’. A little serious perhaps? Maybe not. Let me explain….
I remember a moment in time, about 15 years ago, during my corporate engineering days. At the time I was working as a Mechanical Designer for a well-established, global, engineering company.
I was discussing with a colleague when he was going to retire. He was 63 at the time. I remember he shrugged my question off, mumbled something about work being important, and that was that.
At the time I guessed work was his life. In the office he had importance, purpose, and meaning. All important things to living a happy life.
But, I also wondered if work had become something to fill his time, and he was holding back leaving (even though he could afford it) because (in his mind) he didn’t have anything else to do.
I’m not saying this is right or wrong. it’s a mere observation. But, at the same time, I wonder if there is something to be seen here – the ability to adapt is as important as the ability to undertake whatever it is you choose to do.
Because we all need some kind of purpose – whatever that may be. Without purpose you stagnate. Mentally and physically. Of course, it’s subjective as to the importance you put on this purpose.
Why did this come to mind today? Well, after a fun few days away exploring North Wales with friends i’d not seen for a while, thrown in with some kitesurfing, thrown in with some time on the beach, I was back in Derby, working on a few landscaping projects.
And, to be honest, I’m happy to be working. I’m happy to be doing something I enjoy (for now), and I’m happy to do something I find purpose in.
Naturally, the money is good. But it’s not just about the money. It’s also not just about having the freedom to do what you want, when you want. It goes deeper than that.
We all need some kind of purpose – some kind of application of skill to a task in hand, because working is good for your health – mentally, and physically. (As long as it’s the right work for you – which is, of course, subjective).
It’s just taken a while to see the (true) value in this!
And it’s all good……
